Act 118: Doug Responds to My Complaint
On October 15, 2003, a month to the day after I had filed my complaint against him, Doug Sprinkle filed a response. Although I think it makes for interesting reading, you may not want to plow through it, so I'll summarize Doug's key point, which is: Yes, he made statements in court that were not accurate. But he didn't know that his statements were inaccurate at the time he made them, so his statements were not knowingly false, but were rather an "honest mistake." His response is eight pages long, so I've obviously over-simplified his position, but I think that's a fair condensation of his main argument. I also want to call your attention to the following passage, in which Doug quotes a light-hearted comment I made on this website: "I realize that a compulsion to tell the truth puts me at a severe disadvantage in dealing with lawyers, but that's the way it is." At first, I couldn't understand why Doug had included this quote from my website in his response, as it bore no relevance to the issues at hand. And then it hit me: He's playing to his audience. All of the members of the Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission are, of course, attorneys. So even though my comment had nothing to do with the complaint, Doug was making sure that the members of the Commission knew that I had expressed a disparaging opinion of attorneys in general. Although I have to admit that it's a clever tactic, it's also breathtakingly cynical, in that it's an attempt to prevail by prejudicing the Commission against me, rather than by winning on the strength of his position. Anyway, without further ado, here's what Doug had to say in response to my complaint. |
